Based On Merit?

It was the 2nd stage of the interview process, and those of us that made it past the 1st stage sat together waiting to be called upon for the interview. A lot of chit-chat was going on, especially as we reviewed the questions that were set at the first stage.

Then someone said, “I heard from an insider that they are taking only 6 people – 2 experienced, 4 fresh graduates”.

I scanned the waiting room. There were 20 of us under the “experienced” category while the fresh graduates were about 10. Which 2 will they take out of the 20? I wondered. While I was yet wondering and hoping, one guy said, ‘even if it is one person they are taking, I will be the one!’

I was taken aback. What a vain, arrogant guy he is, I said to myself, he must have a god-father in this company! There was no time to voice out my thoughts, for the interview session started shortly afterwards.

Later that day I gave him a call to ask him how his interview went. He talked about the questions he was asked, some that he could not answer and some he answered that both of us knew he failed. How I smiled inwardly as I said to myself, “let me see how you will be the only one taken!” Then I said, “You know you sounded very proud when you said ‘even if it is one person they are taking, I will be the one!’? You sounded like someone who has connection in there while the rest of us were wasting our time!”

“I was only expressing a promise of God – that He surrounds me with favor as a shield,” he replied innocently. “I may not have the best qualification, I may not be the most eloquent, I may not have the all the experience they are looking for, but I have God, who can work things for my favor. I have seen the hand of God in my life, times without number, especially when I do not deserve something, and He just does it for me. God is my connection!”

This got me thinking. It did not come as a surprise to me when later on I learnt that he was contacted for the next stage of the interview.

Have you ever experienced the hand of God in your life that all you can say is “this is a miracle” or “it is only God who could have done this for me” or “Do I really deserve this?”

I don’t know about you, but there are times in my life when I was not deserving of His love or His favor, but He just showered me with it anyway. It could even happen when I was slacking in prayer, being less diligent with the things of God, or being irregular with church attendance.  While I am not saying that one should take for granted your prayer life, sowing of seeds, attending church, reading and studying His word, etc (for these help to build our relationship with God, help us withstand/resist the wiles of the enemy, and gives us the natural and supernatural blessings that come with them), I have learnt that God is sovereign, and indeed He surrounds His children with love and favor. Most times the things He does for us are not because we merit them but because we are favored in His sight.

When you have the favor of God, you may not have the best CV to get the job, you may not have spent the most hours in the office to get the promotion (in the midst of ‘downsizing’), you may not have the best physical appearance to have the spouse of your dreams, or you may not have done something extraordinary to have your miracle when everyone else thinks it is impossible. With God’s favor, your case is different.

We are instructed to “Do our best…then trust God to bring victory…” [Proverbs 21:31 MSG]. The victory is yours because surely, the Lord blesses the righteous and surrounds them with His favor as with a shield [Psalm 5:12, NIV].

Have a favor-filled week ahead.

The race is not usually for the swiftest, fastest or strongest, but for whom God gives grace. the power of positive confession too is great. Irrespective, God’s grace is infinite and can go against all natural laws. You have favor-filled week too

So true Rita…reminds me of the words, God doesnt call the qualified but He qualifies the called..

I love the answer the guy gave…thats someone who has his confidence rooted in his God and not in self

That’s exactly what my Pastor keeps saying. God has made us a promise, and we should always claim it and put our faith to work!

Beautifully written. I thought that guy was a little arrogant to announce to everyone that he will be the one taken. Nevertheless, you’re right that we need to understand the promises of God to us. We need to know that although we may not have worked enough for certain kinds of favors, He’ll still shower us with them because that’s what a loving Father is made up of.

Yes o! His Grace is sufficient for us! We just have to key in to experience all His Promises concerning us!
    Keep boasting in the Lord!

I am God’s chosen, even though I am not qualified. I used to say something when I was in school, it is either I pass or I pass, cos for God, failure is not an option. It is good to base one’s confidence on God, not on qualifications. Thanks for sharing

Initially I too thought the guy was a bit arrogant but honestly I also admired him because his confidence in God was absolute and he was not afraid to voice it. I know God moves in amazing ways for those who are fearless and whose trust in Him is unshaken and steady.
If it were me I think would have just spoken it in my mind, I do not think I would have had to courage to voice my thoughts.
Thanks for the encouraging post Rita. Having the favor of God is a beautiful thing.

The finger of God is undeniably evident…sometimes its scary.
It is not that we deserve most of them but His mercy unfailingly singles us out.

    God is plenty much.

so true..many times over that i can never recount all.

I would have said – if God wants me to get the job, then I’ll get it; if not, that will be the best thing for me, because He knows best. Is that lack of faith on my part?

  • Blessing

    True indeed!
Favor isn’t fair…Thank God for his favor! It has surely helped me in so many ways. God is good!

  • Fammy

Favor makes all the difference and saves tremendous energy. He has indeed been faithful and i trust Him to do more…

  • uzezi

I am a typical example because all the positions I have had in terms of employment, I was never qualified for. But He has always been faithful extremely and I try never to take His gifts for granted.
