We left the scene of merriment to share a real moment alone together. We both knew that after that night, we may not see each other again.
“Aunty Rita, please can you take me to a place that is not noisy and where I can snap more pictures?” the four year old girl had asked, knowing we had been straining our voices all evening to talk. She was also tired of taking pictures of the same faces all night (for she was practicing some photography skills with my camera).
“Of course,” I indulged her. “Let us go to the balcony and take some fresh air!”
As we walked into the balcony of the tall building, I held my breath at the beauty before me. From where I stood, I could see a considerable view of Abuja metropolis. In the night, the combination of moving cars, tall buildings and flashing signs were spectacular. The sky had a full moon with thousands of twinkling stars. I did not know when I said out loud “this place is beautiful”.
“No it is not!” she said. “There is nothing here to snap!”
I smiled.
From her point of view, all she could see were the brick walls and corners of the balcony. She was not tall enough to see things from my point of view. She could not see the beauty that lay beyond the walls that were there to protect her. She would need to have added about 2 feet (don’t know how many years that would take) before she could, on her own, see the scenery that so took my breath away.
I carried her up and showed her the city. She was excited to see the moon, stars, and beautiful lights. By the time I had put her down, I had learnt a lesson.
God has given us “exceedingly great and precious promises” [2 Peter 1:4]. The promises of God are real but most times from our point of view, we cannot see them tangibly. They are out there ready for us to receive. It may just be that we are limited by our ignorance, our human doubts and fears, the experiences of others, or even the perceived magnitude of certain situations we may be going through. That we cannot “see” them does not mean they do not exist or will not come to pass. We need to set our mind on the end result – the promise, ignoring if need be discouraging circumstances that speak contrary to the promises. This we need to do with an “eye of faith” because our physical point of view is limited, but from God’s point of view, it is all done.
It is my prayer for those waiting on God for the fulfillment of His promise yet are lacking the faith and patience to go on, that they will be strengthened to persevere. Job asked, “What strength have I left, that I should wait and hope? And what is ahead of me, that I should be patient?” [Job 6:11, AMP] God kept him, strengthened him, and he eventually saw what lay ahead of him. The Lord turned the captivity of Job and restored his fortunes; also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before [Job 42:10, AMP].
Remain blessed and may your testimony this new month be “God surrounds me with favor as a shield”.
