The Guy In The Mailroom

It was one of those periods when I was convinced my job could not have been the will of God. The stress, the feeling of being irrelevant, the negative comments from colleagues, and the condition of my health could only help buttress the thoughts running through my mind. I spent quite some time ruminating on a resignation. All that remained was to convince Mr. Rita*, who was not seeing things from my perspective, hence the delay in making a decision.

As I walked past the mailroom one day, I saw the guy in the mailroom praying with a colleague. The scene so touched me that I had to mention it a few days later when I needed to use the mailroom.

“I saw you praying the other day with a colleague,” I started, “Are you a pastor?”

He smiled.

“No, I am not, but I know I have the gifts of encouragement and healing. God placed me here to be able to reach out to people who are discouraged and need hope, or need someone to agree with them for healing. You know workers are so busy, they hardly have time for midweek services or even Sunday services….”

As I left his presence, I pondered. He did not earn as much as I did. His job did not have the challenges and excitement mine had. I don’t know if he had ever been promoted since he joined the company. What I knew was he was content where he was, and he chose to see his job as a gift from God and an opportunity to utilize his spiritual gifts. Only God knows how many lives he must have touched by being in the mailroom.

Have you ever had that feeling that you may not be fulfilling your purpose because of where you currently are?

More often than not, we are at the right place at the right time, without knowing. God, who never makes mistakes, must have placed us in certain places for a time as this. It could be that we are struggling with an area of our life, and God makes us meet people who will help us overcome the challenge. It could be that there are certain people whose lives we are meant to touch and change for good. It could be that there are certain gifts and talents within us that need to be identified and developed before we move into something bigger. It could be that God has placed us in positions where we would have enough resources to support ministries. It could be that He has placed us in certain positions to bring light where there is darkness. It could also be that God has placed us in positions where we will meet “the one”.

You are not walking in God’s purpose only when you work in the church or as a minister. I don’t know where you are now, or how you feel about where you are, but I know you can find out why God allowed you to be there. Whether employed or unemployed, whether you are making so much money or you have just enough, whether you are volunteering or in service, God has placed you where you are for a unique purpose. It is all in His plan to give you the future you hope for. As you walk with Him daily, He will direct your path and order your steps, that you may fully accomplish the purpose for which He created you.

Trust that God has a purpose for where you are at the moment. He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. He is a faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He [Deuteronomy 32:4, NIV].

On that note, I remain thankful to God for my job, for it has helped me meet great people and provides me with resources to bless others. I pray God helps me realize the full purpose for which He placed me here, help me to be content, and prepare me for the next place He is taking me to.

What is it about where you are that you can thank God for?

Have a blessed week ahead.

I’s good to see God’s wisdom in where He has placed us – Joseph, a slave in Egypt, was “a prosperous man”, Genesis 39: 2

‘Have you ever had that feeling that you may not be fulfilling your purpose because of where you currently are?’

The other day, a dear friend n I had this discussion about how I feel I should be doing more than I am n I should be higher n better than where I am…..I guess this just tells me to reflect n make God proud wherever He puts me.

    God bless you real good.

When we are distracted in this way – (the I-can-do- better-than-this scenario) we are in danger of making the wrong choices. We may at times be where things may not seem good, but God has a plan which can only be revealed if we stay with him on the route. Thanks for posting this.

In the last 2 years, my life has moved from stable, secure and all the other good stuff to a big question mark with a lot of uncertainties but guess what? I’ve never trully been happier than I am now. Redemption comes with overwhelming peace that just let’s you know everything is going to be fine cos He’ll never leave us nor forsake us.

I’m not where I want to be yet but I have Jesus and I’m not where I used to be so I know that everything is gonna be just fine.

Lovely post, 5mins with someone can change ur perspective on a lot of things thereby changing your life and I’m grateful for people like the man in the mail room.

    God bless you for sharing.
