The Name Changer

As Jesus awaited the return of the two disciples sent ahead into Jerusalem to bring a colt, the crowd that followed Him broke into small groups. Some sat down and started some chitchats. A teenager, who joined the crowd after Jesus left Jericho, spoke concerning a familiar face he saw in the group he was in.

“I think I know you from somewhere,” he told the man whose face looked familiar. He paused for a moment as he tried to recall where he could have seen the face. Something came to his mind but he was not sure. “Are you not one of the poor beggars my father and I saw at the side of the road every time we passed Jericho?” Then he stuttered “Are you not blind…”

“…Bartimaeus,” Bartimaeus, son of Timaeus finished the sentence for him. “I used to be known as Blind Bartimaeus, but Jesus, Son of David has healed me. I will no longer be called ‘blind’ for now I see…”

Fictional Bible Story taken from Mark 10: 46-52; Mark 11: 1-2.

Our Loving Heavenly Father is a name-changer. The bible gives account of several times He changed names as people changed the path they walked and moved into their destiny [Gen 17:5; Gen 35:10; John 1:42]. But the name I am referring to here is the name that comes from circumstances or situations. E.g. single sister Ruth, barren Sarah, blind Bartimaeus, poor Lazarus, Rahab the harlot, corrupt Zacchaeus or possessed Mary. God in His grace, love and power dealt with the situations, and changed their names and their stories.

There are certain situations that seem to define you or have been an issue to you for so long that anytime reference is made to you, the adjective of that situation must be included. Your loving Father is the same God yesterday, today and forever. God through Christ can change your situation and your story. What He has done before, He can still do, even much more. Nothing is too hard for Him to do [Jeremiah 32:17b], nothing is new to Him [Ecclesiastes 1:9]. He is not bound by time for with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day [2 Peter 3:8b].

As you let God work in you, He says, “…I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland…” [Isaiah 43:19, NLT]. Yes, He can do for you what would ordinarily seem impossible. He can change your situation, your story and your name – for good.

Remain blessed and encased in the bubble of favor from the ‘Name Changer’.

Oh yes, He is indeed the “Name Changer.” There are no prisoners with Him, He liberates…sets free the captives from situations that have tried to define us.
